- Here is Alysis' Disk Expander, downloaded from Compu$erve. From the
- Read Me file...
-
- The Disk Expander is a system extension. Adding it to your Macintosh
- System Folder will allow you to read and use files and applications
- that have been compressed by More Disk Space. You will find that
- applications are much smaller in compressed form and that they require
- no extra time to launch. Compressed applications and compressed
- document files behave exactly as you would expect them to. Even
- multi-megabyte files will open without delay and without any disk

-
- This program will update Alysis' More Disk Space to version 1.1.
- Here is an excerpt from the Read Me file:
-
- More Disk Space 1.1 brings you two new features:
-
- The Omit System Folder option makes the More Disk Space command ignore
- items in the System Folder. With this option off, you can compress
- items in the system folder like faxes, After Dark Modules and others.
-
- The Verify Writes option gives you hands-free verification. You can
- still do on-the-fly verification of writes by depressing the 'v' key,
- but now you can do it without pressing a key at all. For large jobs
- on removable media, this feature may prove particularly useful.

-
- Huh? A problem with an ancient version of Stuffit means there "must" be an
- ongoing problem? Phooey! Does the problem occur with Stuffit Classic, the
- now current shareware package? I appreciate Jeff's bringing our attention
- to a possible problem and stimulating Alysis to work with Aladdin to
- maintain compatibility, but this latest note is irresponsible. The
- statement that "Alysis has simply misinterpreted Aladdin's note" is
- astonishing since Jeff doesn't work for either company (or does he?). Why
- does Alysis get the blame if other packages (e.g., Compact Pro) allegedly
- work fine? Is Alysis lying? Has Jeff bothered to check? People who beta
- test software (and I am one of them) should realize they have unfinished
- works in their hands and that reporting based on those comes under the
- requirements of responsible journalism: clearly distinguish between facts
- and opinions and check the facts (twice). The "facts" in Jeff's note are
- failures in tests of Stuffit 1.5.1 versus an (unspecified) version of MDS.
- The rest is unsubstantiated fluff. If a beta tester finds problems, the
- bug reports should go to the vendor, not the public. Finding problems is
- the POINT of beta testing. If a serious bug is ignored by the vendor in
- the rush to ship the product, then blow the whistle. Alysis has
- acknowledged the existence of an incompatibility and expressed a strong
- desire to work with Aladdin to patch the problem. That's all anyone can
- expect of them. The information is helpful (I will watch out when using
- Stuffit and MDS together) until a definitive statement comes from the
- software houses (not third parties). As for the rest, I must wonder what
- Jeff's agenda is.

- Subject: Apple's New Ad Campaign
-
- I have to wonder about the logic of Apple's new ads (I haven't seen them, just
- read about them in newpapers and Tidbits). For anyone not familiar with the
- ads I'm talking about, essentially, the new ads will confront PCs and Windows
- directly.
-
- Who are these ads targeted towards? Certainly, you can't expect someone after
- seeing that ad, to sell their PC and get a Mac instead. Most PC users believe
- that what they have is the leader in technology and they love to say things
- like, "My PC runs at 33 MHz, how 'bout your Mac?" An ad won't change their
- mind. (Don't get me wrong; Mac users are pretty much the same way in reverse)
-
- Likewise, most PCs come installed with Windows now (Windows Ready!) and the
- lack of ease of installation isn't too much a concern. When someone walks
- into a computer store to buy a computer (with nothing else decided except the
- fact that they WILL buy a computer) the salesperson will make sure they leave
- the store with a PC. Will these ads decrease the number of people buying PCs
- and increase the people who show up and say, "Gimme a Mac!"?
-
- I also hope that Apple removes the phrase, "It will let you run MS-DOS" from
- their ads. It can't! Ok, so you add Soft-PC and, sorry Insignia, you have a
- 286 that runs at the speed of an Apple II. DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!
-
- I'd appreciate any insight on these ads, whether just a guess or someone who
- actually has something to do with these ads.

- What video card do I need to use this monitor? Will Apple's 8*24 card drive

- Just a quick comment about the silly responses which have appeared regarding
- how CD players know song information. While it is true that the CD is divided
- into time intervals, there is also a "header file" on the disk which contains
- a unique CD code, number and length of songs (and movements for classical
- music - only top-of-the-line players decode this information), as well as
- other information (some of which was meant to help prevent piracy).
-
- An example of how this information is used is that on some players you can

- only play the songs you like on the CD. All it takes is money to get all the
- features ;-)

-
- Well yeah...it's true that out of 23 people it's a safe bet that two of
- them have the same birthday, but what are the odds of them having the same
- birth*date*. I mean, I'm sure that someone else on this list must have a
- June 19th birthday, but how many are 06191956? Or for that matter, how
- many are 06191956 at 0931? I'd say that the odds are rather small.
-
- Now if you consider that the birthday paradox works in a situation where
- you have only 366 dates max to work with, the situation could change
- considerably with CD times when you consider a top time of about 72
- minutes, which would mean 72*60*75 frames or 324,000 frames. If we use
- the same ratio of CDs to frames as applies for people to dates (which is
- about 1:16), you'd have to have about 20,000 discs in your collection
- before you really had to worry about a ID conflict. Okay, the Library of
- Congress may have a problem on their hands, but I probably won't.
-
- Just out of curiosity, isn't there anything else that's used as an
- identifier, like the number of tracks on the CD? After all, a 72 minute
- CD of Beethoven's 9th would have many fewer tracks than a 72 minute CD of
- Elton John.
-
- Oh...and by the way, since I've been misunderstood before...this is *NOT*
- a flame.

- True enough. It's not quite that bad, though. If we
- assume that the length of your CDs is evenly distributed
- between 45 and 90 minutes, you need about 520 to get
- a 50-50 change of repeats. If you shrink that distribution

- Just my two cents worth here:
-
- How'n'da'heck does the CDROM recognizes the disc that you insert? I
- believe it is because in the CDROM format there is a track that has the
- names, times, track numbers, location, and whatnot of the contents of
- the CDROM. There's nothing really magical going on in the CDROM player,
- except for the fact that it is just reading this information that is
- encoded on all CDs. I know that this isn't just a CDROM reader trick
- because a friend of mine has one of those do-everything-and-walk-the-dog

- I'm hoping that one of the resident experts in Listserv-Land can help me out.

- Cornell's Engineering Admissions office would like to have some type of an
- on-line contact database to track incoming phone calls and letters. They'd
- like to be able to maintain a record of applicants contacting the office and
- better handle subsequent contacts by the same person(s) by accessing the info
- in this database (comments, reason they called, etc.).
-
- They want something that will contain (at least) the following fields:

- -> Who they wish to speak to (or who the letter was sent to)
- -> Their phone number
- -> Date they called
- -> Who they talked to when they did call
- -> Any comments about the call
-
- That in itself seems simple enough. However, what complicates the matter is
- that it needs to be centrally located on our file server, and (here's the tough
- part) has to be able to give write access to probably 3 people that might be
- taking messages concurrently. It also needs to have read access to at least 6

- Subject: Of Mice and Switches
-
- This is in response to several messages lately on mouse switches failing.
- I had a failure of a mouse switch early this year. It was an ADB mouse
- on a Mac IIcx. The mouse was made by Logitech, sold by Apple in 1989.
- Neither organization would do anything other than to sell me a new mouse.
- So I attempted to find a new switch.
-
- Upon inspection, the old switch had printed on it the words
- "OMRON JAPAN" and two codes: 13Z8RAD and D2F-01L83W.
- Only the last code is important for this tale.
-
- A local electronics store (not Radio Shack) was persuaded to let me leaf
- through its distribuer's listings. I found
-
- Kent Electronics
- 2115 De La Cruz Blvd.
- Santa Clara, CA. 95050

- Electro Components Dist.
- 3496 Arden Rd.
- Hayward, CA. 94545
- (510) 783-5800 FAX (510) 732-0795
-
- which carried OMRON components.
-
- The switch is called a subminiature basic switch, dimensions in mm:
- 6.5H x 12.8W x 5.8D. The model number is D2F-01 or D2F-01L.
- The latter has a small lever attached to push the actuation plunger.
- The distributers wanted to sell by the gross. Electro Components
- finally gave me a (free) D2F-01L switch as a sample. I removed the
- lever, installed the switch, and the mouse has worked perfectly over the
- past few months.
-
- So find someone to sell you an OMRON switch or equivalent if you have a
- problem switch in your mouse. Installation involves minor mouse surgery
- and soldering three pins on the switch. The usual warranty disclaimers
- probably apply.

- Subject: Quadra/OverDrive (C)
-
- Several people have asked for more details about Newer Technology's
- Quadra/OverDrive because of my tantalizing earlier posting.
-
- I want to reiterate that I do not own one of these things, although I am
- thinking about it, so anything I say is not, I repeat NOT based on personal
- experience.
-
- The Quadra/OverDrive accelerates the existing cpu in a Quadra 700 or 900 to
- 33MHz, resulting in a performance boost of about 30%. It does so by
- increasing the processor clock speed, NOT by replacing the '040 chip. This is
- why it is so cheap (LIST price of only $349). Physically, it consists of a
- small simm-type board that plugs into the unused ROM-upgrade slot. A new fan
- is also included for better heat disapation. I do not know if this replaces or
- is used in addition to the existing fan.
-
- This is about all the info I have been able to extract from the smattering of
- literature references that I have, including Newer Technology's catalogue.
-
- On a limb remarks:
-
- The biggest concern one might have about this is whether the 68040 chip in the
- q700 or q900 will be able to take the stress of being run at a higher clock
- speed than it is rated for. Motorola initially had trouble getting decent
- yields of 33MHz chips so the quadra was introduced at 25MHz. It is my
- understanding that they made some sort of alteration to improve the yield, but
- this may have been in the manufacturing process, not the chip itself.
-
- 33MHz is not all that fast for any given transistor, so FUNCTIONALLY, it should
- not prove a problem for the 25MHz chips. The main problem that arrises when
- increasing the clock speed is that you now are sinking and sourcing current
- through each transister at a higher rate. Each time you do so a certain amount
- of heat is generated. This heat takes a certain amount of time to dissipate
- through the chip away from the transister. The very HIGH density at which
- these elements are packed in a chip like the '040 already makes this a
- problem.
- By increasing the clock, you are decreasing the amount of time allowed for the
- heat energy to dissipate from a given transistor before another cycle dumps
- more energy into the same area. Different substrate and package materials can
- result in better heat conductance. The simplest way to increase the rate of
- heat transfer, though, from basic thermodynamics, is to keep the temperature
- differential between the 'hot' part of the chip (the actual transistors) and
- the 'cool' part (the outside surface) maximized. To do this one generally heat
- sinks the outer surface with a high-conductance material cut in a shape with a
- lot of surface area. Typically this is a hunk of copper in the shape of fins.
- Blowing (relatively) cool air over these fins takes heat away and (hopefully)
- keeps it cool. The Quadra/Overdrive apparently provides a fan to increase the
- flow of air, thus moving excess heat away. This sounds like it would probably
- do the job. There is a lingering caveat that some people would remind me to
- mention here. Increasing the flow of cooling air is not always good. If not
- implemented right, it is actually possible to cool a part too fast resulting
- such a large temperature differential between to points in a part that it
- breaks due to uneven thermal expansion. This is a very rare blunder, though.
-
- The Newer Tech. people have been shipping a similar toy for Mac IIfxs for a
- while, so I would hope they have solved most of these types of problems.
-
- As far as memory goes, you should be able to continue using 80ns or better
- simms at 33MHz. If you feel really worried about it, go ahead and pay the
- extra few dolars for 70ns, but you will not see any performance gain.
-
- The video simms that the q700, q900 and mac LC use have been only rated at
- 100ns up to now. With the advent of the q950, I imagine retailers will begin
- to make 80ns VRAM simms available. I am not entirely convinced that they are
- necesarry for the video even at the higher clock speed, but if so, you should
- wait a bit. 80ns memory is not really much more expensive to make than 100ns
- memory so I don't think the cost will be that much more. Newer Technology's
- catalogue mentions no requirement for faster video simms, but this may be an
- oversight.

- IMHO, I doubt seriously that the extra memory in itself is causing

- you also turned on 32-bit addressing in the memory cdev. If so, I
- would check to see if you have some applications or extentions or cdevs

-
- Since you still aren't *above* 8MB, you don't need to turn on 32 bit

- without using 32 bit addressing. (No need for it though, as far as

- This weekend's issue of the New York Times Magazine contains a remark-
- able article criticizing Microsoft's unwillingness or inability to
- fix what sounds like a similar font bug in Word for Windows. It doesn't
- inspire much hope.

- - x3270 using MacX -
-
- Hi netters,
-
- when using x3270 under MacX to have an X window based
- access/terminal emulation for IBM mainframes,
- the standard font used is too large as to support
- a window sized 640 x 480 pixels as the limits are
- on the 13" Apple RGB monitor.
-
- Who has designed/created a smaller font so that
- the created window fits on the 13" monitor?
-
- Thanks a lot
